Gmail App Passwords: What They Are and When to Use Them
An app password is a separate credential for a compatible app or device that cannot use Google's modern sign-in flow. It is not the password used for normal browser sign-in.
Use Sign in with Google when available
Google recommends its built-in sign-in option instead of app passwords in most cases. Use an app password only when the app requires it and your account supports the feature.
Account requirements
App passwords require two-step verification. The option may not be available for an organization-managed account, an account enrolled in Advanced Protection, or an account configured with security keys only.
Changing the main password
Google revokes app passwords when the main account password changes. A previously supplied app password may then stop working, and a new one may be required. Keep this in mind when reviewing delivered credentials.
Compare the current listing
The Gmail 2FA and app-password listing shows the current credential format, price, age description, and availability. Check those details before purchasing; a product name alone does not describe every access condition.
If an email client cannot connect
- Confirm whether the client supports Sign in with Google.
- Follow that client's documented account setup.
- If an app password is required, verify that it has not been revoked.
- Do not repeatedly retry incorrect credentials or assume that a login challenge can be bypassed.
Read Google's official app-password instructions for the current requirements and steps.
Replacement or refund eligibility depends on the listing and our Terms of Service. Report invalid credentials or a listing mismatch through your Orders page or support. Read the conditions before changing or using an account.
Which credential goes where?
| Credential | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Main Gmail password | Normal account sign-in when Google requests a password. |
| Second-factor information | The additional verification step associated with the account. |
| App password | A separate credential for a compatible app requiring this access method. |

Browser sign-in → [gmail-address] + [main-password] Compatible email app → [gmail-address] + [app-password]
Follow the email client's own setup instructions and prefer Sign in with Google when it is supported.
Example: an app stops connecting after a password change
If an email client previously connected using an app password and the main account password changes, Google revokes the app password. Check the client's sign-in method and the account's current app-password availability. Reusing the old app password will not restore it.
Ask these questions before ordering
- Does your email client require an app password, or offer modern Google sign-in?
- Does the listing explicitly supply a separate app password?
- Are the age range, country, and second-factor details suitable for your requirement?
The aged Gmail listing states 2FA and an app password. Other listings should not be assumed to include one. Ask support about any missing field before purchasing, and read the warranty conditions before changing the account.
